How are the eyes affected by allergies?
We all love Northeast Philadelphia but with all the beautiful scenery and sites comes some nasty allergies. This is especially true during the Fall and Spring months when the pollen is everywhere. In addition to your normal seasonal allergies, you may notice some itching, tearing, and burning in the eyes.
This eye allergy is known as allergic conjunctivitis. Foreign objects, such as pollen, dust or smoke, enter your body. Your body then overreacts as it mistakes them for harmful items. A chemical called histamine is released, drying out your eyes and telling your body it needs to produce more tears. Your eye’s blood vessels become inflamed which is why your eyes feel itchy and red.
What can be done for eye allergies?
We have a number of solutions for those suffering from seasonal eye allergies. In addition to your normal, over-the-counter drugs such as Allegra, Zyrtec, and Claritin, we would recommend prescription allergy eye drops which we are happy to prescribe in the office. An over-the-counter nasal spray is also a good idea.
Give us a call and well be happy to discuss all your options so you can stop suffering from eye allergies!
